Decoding Products: Reddit (Product 1)

  • Social News Website

I recently saw a tweet that stated, "If you want to find startup ideas, go to Reddit"; the ideas people share and discussions that happen on those are worth reading. Sometimes when I'm bored, I open random Reddit posts and read all the thoughts people write that turn out to be interesting.

Reddit is a social news aggregation and discussion website. Users submit their content in the form of images, videos, or texts, and other people then vote up or down. It is the 9th-most-visited website in the world. The 17-year-old company was founded by University of Virginia roommates and is currently valued at over $15 billion. Snoop Dogg is one of the early investors in the company.

Reddit is one of those companies that used the "fake it till you make it" strategy in their early stages of development to make it look populated. After the founders left the company, it became difficult to keep the website on the road, and had to bring both the founders back, who then worked on the company to make iOS and Android applications. They didn't see overnight success. It took 12 years to make Reddit a Unicorn and become part of most smartphones.

Here's a list of some of the best subreddits to read:
