  • Car Sharing

This post is about zipcar's story from owning one car in Cambridge to owning thousands across North America. Started in early 2000 by Robin Chase, Zipcar was ahead of its time. With no car rental applications/software in the market, Zipcar got a first-mover advantage. From 2001 to 2007, they captured the market in 6 different cities across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. But it was not until 2012 before Zipcar become profitable. Excellent Product design helped Zipcar in becoming successful. With such heavy technology, making it intuitive and easy for users is a challenge, not to forget about the maintenance and security which increased their customer base. Today Zipcar is best in the fleet by showing Patient and Persistence, which are essential in running any business.

Product Design Approach:

-User-centric design (easy-to-use features)
-Intuitive
-Excellent Customer Service
-Cost-effectiveness

This shows that with a balanced product design approach of User-centric, Innovation, and Customer service and a pinch of patience and persistence, a product leads to success.
